Zack Steffen Reflects on Facing Messi and Inter Miami’s Transformation

USMNT and Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen has shared his thoughts on playing against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the MLS this season. Messi’s arrival at Miami brought a dramatic shift to the team, and Steffen recalled how his introduction completely changed the atmosphere of a match they were dominating.

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Steffen described the moment Messi came on as a game-changer:
“It’s crazy, bro. We killed them. Then Messi came on and scored a few minutes later. Dude, the demeanor of the fans, the demeanor of the team… they were just a totally different fing team. It was fing wild.”

Miami, powered by Messi, went on to claim the Supporters’ Shield but fell short of winning the MLS Playoff trophy. They are set to participate in the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States.

Inter Miami Plans to Keep Messi Beyond 2025
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has revealed plans to extend Lionel Messi’s stay at the club beyond 2025. The Argentine legend, who is under contract until winter 2025, has had an outstanding impact on Miami since joining in the summer of 2023, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer with 34 goals and 18 assists in 39 appearances. Messi also helped lead the team to victories in the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield.

Mas expressed confidence that Messi will remain with Miami beyond 2025, stating:
“Leo and I will sit and discuss the future. But I fully expect that in 2026, when we open our new stadium, Leo Messi will be our No. 10.”

Mas emphasized that Inter Miami is committed to building a competitive team, noting that they will utilize every roster tool available to strengthen the squad for a trophy-filled 2025 season, which will include multiple competitions such as the CONCACAF Champions League, Club World Cup, and Leagues Cup.

Messi, who will be 38 when his current contract ends, continues to be a pivotal figure in Inter Miami’s future plans as the club looks to build on its recent successes.
